Pencil and paper ready to collect some notes? We are about to go deep and you may want to jot down ideas or self reflections that come up as you read. Go back later and read them again and see what else might come up. It’s incredible what we can uncover by simple reflection. Lets begin…
In order to show up some place, anyplace for that matter, you need to have a destination to show up to. Now, I am pretty certain that we both know that I was playing with words in the title. But, in reality “Showing up” is what most people need to do more. Can you imagine if you showed up for half of the ideas, offers, opportunities, or dreams you have encountered. The idea of showing up can be used in every area of life. Am I right?
You may be saying, “Okay, okay I get it… I need to show up. but… How exactly do I do that??” Or… “Why do I want to do that?” That, my friend, is what we are about to uncover. Everything in life is about choice. There are and always will be conflicting thoughts in your head about which choice to make. The difference between people that want to arrive at a goal and those that show up in the world they created are very simple. Do you see what I did there? I gave you one of the ways right there in that sentence. Wanting to arrive isn’t good enough. Are you ready to show up?
Waiting in want. Every desire we have starts with a want. We want more money. We want a better job. We want to be successful. We want a partner in life. We want a better car. We want less stress. The list could go on forever, wouldn’t you agree? One of the important things to recognize is that the “want” alone cannot give you any of the above listed things.. I can almost hear someone saying, “I’m aware that “want” can’t make it happen by itself, it takes action also”. Yes! You are absolutely correct. However, how many times have you wanted something and took some action yet didn’t accomplish your goal?
You see my friend, the want and action are a good start. Action is what takes you out of the Waiting. Often times people get stuck in the waiting for a “perfect time to start”. Maybe its after they finish a project, or school, or when they get more time. HA! That one always makes me chuckle. Don’t get me wrong, I have been guilty of the “more time” excuse. Unfortunately, that’s all any of it is. Excuses. It’s a hard pill to swallow for some. To own the fact that you are making excuses would mean being accountable for the fact that you. You, yourself are holding you back.
The good news is… Awareness is half the battle! Being aware of your “inaction” can allow you to switch it up and be “in action”. Waiting in want will always leave you waiting and wanting somewhere in the future with more excuses of why things can’t or never do happen. Are you ready to take some action?
While I am super excited you are ready to take action…. Lets first get Inspired. Inspiration is the spark or the energetic connection between the “want” and the action. Do you remember the last time you were inspired? Take a minute and think back to that moment. Remember what it was and how you felt. Maybe you remember being filled with an emotion so amazing that your whole body seemed to vibrate. Maybe you couldn’t put a name to the emotion but you knew it felt really good. The emotional charge that comes with emotion is the “kick start” to your action. The key, is to stay in that inspired state. Wondering how to keep that inspiration alive?
Vision! Do you remember when you were a child the amazing imagination you had? Lets put that to good use. Make sure you have that piece of paper and something to write with I mentioned earlier. Now put those aside. You will need them in just a moment. For now, get comfortable. I want you to think for a minute about what it is you are wanting to achieve. Can you picture yourself in the end goal? Can you picture and imagine what it would feel like to be living in that reality? What are you wearing? Where are you? Who is with you? What is happening? Are you saying something? What are you feeling in that moment? Now, close your eyes and really go deep with this. See it, but most importantly feel it. Play it out in your mind as though its already happened and you are in it. After a few minutes of playing it through in your mind, open your eyes and write it out, draw it out, whatever you need to recreate it on the paper you have set aside. The beautiful thing about our minds is that when we sit and run things through our mind as though they already occurred? Magical things happen. Our minds do not differentiate what happens with our eyes open versus with our eyes closed. If we play out the experience in our mind so vividly that we experience the emotion as though it occurred… Who is to say it didn’t? After-all our memories are nothing more than a collection of perceived events tied to emotion. There have been studies to show this phenomena time and again. This is how hypnosis helps so many people move past blocks in their lives. As an Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner that is a certified clinical hypnotist I can help you create and show up in the life that is waiting for you.
Ready, set, jump! I realize this isn’t the traditional saying we all know. You may be wondering.. “Why didn’t she say go?” I wanted to make sure I emphasized the amount of action needed there at the end. It’s not good enough to stick your toe in the water. If you realize the water is cold, what is the likelihood that you will actually jump in? Now, that’s not to say you should recklessly jump into the water without first doing a little research. Is it deep enough? Are there rocks down there? Has anyone else done it and survived? Most importantly… checking in with your gut and listening to what your intuition is guiding you to do. Once all that is complete. Jump! Jump quickly before any doubt or second guessing can creep in. You have done your research and your intuition has said, “yes” so jump!
Let me be clear. When I said do some research I didn’t mean take the next year on hiatus researching so you can make and find more excuses to delay… uh huh… I’m on to you.. Just kidding, but you might be surprised how many people actually find themselves in that scenario. You do not need to know every little detail of how to start. Too much information can actually be paralyzing.
Research has actually shown that we have mere moments to act before our mind starts to talk us out of what could be a perceived threat. What is a perceived threat? Anything that could take us out of our comfort zone. Take a step and learn a little. Now take another step and learn some more. It is completely okay and actually encouraged to learn as you go. We live in an ever changing world and it is expected that we will have to shift and change how we do things as we go. Besides, can you imagine the information overload you would have if you wanted something and instantly got all the details of what you needed to do in each moment and how to do it for the next 6 months all in one moment??? Most people can barely multitask the daily chores let alone a 6 month task list broken down into moments of time…. Each step, each breath, each thought, each encounter and how to interact or what decision to make. Yikes… I have days I can’t remember to take the red box movie back let alone the pressure of remembering if I was supposed to take 5 steps vs 10 steps to talk to the person with red hair or brown. I probably went a little overkill on that but do you get the point? A little research, gut check and then Action is your friend.
So we have covered 4 of the 6 best ways to show up. Lets recap before continuing. We went over Making a Choice, sparking inspiration, using vision to drive emotional charge and taking action before we have a chance to make excuses and create unneeded delays. Moving forward we need to make sure we are being kind to self. Doubts may creep in. Some days will be harder than others to fully “show up”. By honoring our ups and downs we are saying to ourselves… “we matter”. Now, let me be clear. There is a difference between honoring an off day and using doubt or fear of something to paralyze you from action. How do you know? Gut check. At some level you will know the difference and you just need to be accountable for it.
Touch in with yourself… Is the slump related to fear? Is the fear valid?
Now ask yourself… Are you happy where you are?
Remember the feeling of being in your future state of the goal you have. Is this moment taking you closer or farther from your goal? What do you need to do next to take you closer to it. This part of the process is just a little refocus.. By refocusing from the state of “stuck” it allows us to remember how good its going to be living our goal and reset our focus to that which will take us closer to our goal.
The final and my favorite way to show up and see the greatest return for minimal effort is…. Drum roll please……… Gratitude. There is research, inspirational quotes and whole workshops devoted around this topic. Gratitude is so powerful and so easy to do. If you are new to gratitude practice and wonder what it looks like… It’s literally stopping and giving thanks for even the smallest of things. Sometimes as we start out on a new path or if we are in a “slump” it seems impossible to find things to be grateful for. I promise there is always something. Its a matter of retraining your brain to find it. I will do another blog post dedicated to this topic because it is one of my fav’s and I could go on and on about it. The important thing to take note of in this moment is that it is important and you should definitely start taking moments to give thanks for what you have. The more you notice the good, the more good you will notice.
Okay total recap!
